In honor of Infinity War this week.
As you know, NXT is the gift in WWE that keeps on giving. While RAW or Smackdown occasionally take some time off, NXT consistently provides quality entertainment every week (except right after TakeOver’s). However, it seems like the new era of NXT officially begins tonight. We’re seeing two title defences, and none of the wrestlers who have been called up in the latest batch of NXT call-ups. As always, I’m @Parkman15Love with your Spoiler-Free NXT Preview for Win Column Sports!
First, a quick recap of the April 18 episode:
- Johnny Gargano & Candice LeRae cut a promo on Andrade Cien Almas and Tommaso Ciampa.
- Ricochet defeats Fabien Aichner.
- War Raiders defeat Local Talent.
- Lars Sullivan over Killian Dain in a No-DQ match.
- Candice LeRae over Zelina Vega. After the match, Johnny Gargano challenges Aleister Black for the NXT Championship – and Aleister accepts for next week.
Note: Spoilers are available here on Win Column! Read at your own risk!
The Main Event
Johnny Wrestling had quite the past few weeks. After defeating his arch-nemesis Tommaso Ciampa (or Tommy Entertainment) in an unsactioned match, he also sent Andrade Cien Almas to the main roster last week. After tying up his rivalries with his two biggest rivals as a singles competitor, he now faces off against Aleister Black… with the NXT Championship on the line. Now, these two do have history. Gargano is the only man to get a pin fall on Aleister (with a ton of outside help. Babyfaces, right?). Still – history between the two. Give these two time, we’ll have a barn burner. Will Johnny Gargano finally achieve his dream of being NXT Champion? My guess is NXT doesn’t end Aleister’s dominance… especially on a random episode of NXT with a very short title reign. What a shrewd wrestling mind I have!
Well, those dastardly dicks known as the Undisputed Era are scheduled to appear live. What I would love is an explanation of why Roderick Strong turned on Pete Dunne. I’m not upset about what happened – we’re going to get British Strong Style vs Undisputed Era, folks – but it would be nice to know Roderick’s explanation. This author’s excited to see where they go from here. That’s a lot of gold they’ll have to defend, and GM William Regal does stay on top of his game and make champions, you know, defend their championships. Looking at you, Kurt Angle…
Which segments me nicely into the second title match of the night (that was good, hey?). Adam Cole bay-bay is defending the North American Championship tonight. Who might his competitor be? Perhaps someone in the ladder match, like EC3 or Ricochet? Someone credible & moving up to the main roster like Eric Young? Or maybe someone completely random, like Oney Lorcan. Now, Lorcan is a Full Sail favorite – but has he even slightly been built up to defeat the Era? I only have two questions. How long does it take for Undisputed to interfere, and how long does it take for his tag partner Danny Burch (or someone else who wants to stake a claim) to come help?
If you partake in spoilers, there may be a few other matches not listed on WWE.com’s official preview, including Kairi Sane vs Shazza McKenzie and TM61 vs The Street Profits. However, they may be bumped to a later date.
Finally, we’re scheduled to see yet another Heavy Machinery vs Tino Sabbatelli & Riddick Moss match in what should run away with feud of the year.
The Championship Scene
Not scheduled for tonight’s show is Shanya Baszler. Now, if anyone deserves a night off, it’s her. Did you see her put her shoulder back in place against the ring-post? While she’s going to make the title a lot more credible in my opinion, her lack of challengers is concerning. Kairi Sane is being built up as the next challenger, Dakota Kai is being build as the next Bayley and Nikki Cross is still in developmental for…. reasons. However, Cross should be coming up soon and Kai needs some serious seasoning before she’s in title contention. I have no doubt these girls will step up, but NXT’s women’s division is their biggest question mark for sure.
The Tag Titles are not a concern in the slightest though, with the team of Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly holding them. I do wonder what will happen when Bobby is healthy though. For the time being, however, this team should be entertaining as hell. Roderick is a great wrestler, and well, if you’re not aware of Kyle then please watch this video. Is he the most quietly entertaining character in WWE?
Yes. Case Closed. If you disagree, you’re wrong.
Era vs British Strong Style (and eventually, Undisputed vs War Raiders) will be fantastic. Put these guys on my TV more please.
- If rumors are to be believed, then the Ricochet vs Velveteen Dream program could be among the best this year.
- How refreshing is it to see Drew McIntryre called up as a heel on RAW? Him and – I would never thought I’d say this – Dolph Ziggler have been the best part of RAW.
- Am I the only one who wished we got to see an Authors of Pain vs War Raiders match before the call up?
That’s all from me folks! Will you be tuning in tonight? If you want to talk NXT, tweet me @Parkman15Love and follow us on Twitter & Facebook! Thanks, as always, for reading!
