Though we may be in the midst of the dog days of summer, the pro wrestling scene in Alberta was as hot as ever over the past seven days. Four shows took place courtesy of Candian Wrestling’s Elite, while match cards were announced for a pair of performances taking place this weekend. Additionally, it looks as though Lanny Poffo won’t be the only big name joining RCW for next week’s shows, as the promotion announced the returns of two major names in the Western Canadian indie scene.

Cruel Summer Tour

Last week, Canadian Wrestling’s Elite headed to the prairies for the Alberta-only Cruel Summer tour, headlined by former TNA X-Division Champion and PWA Hall of Famer Johnny Devine. Over the course of four days, the CWE held events in Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Cochrane and Medicine Hat.

Said Danny Duggan on the tour:

“Edmonton continued to show that they are a part of the growing CWE family by selling out the facility on a (Thursday) night on a red hot summer night when business traditionally sees a small dip until the fall. We can’t thank you enough!”

“And that main event? Match of the year candidate! Incredible! Marky showed he is the elite athlete of Alberta wrestling and Chris Perish showed he was a major player, completely blowing away the locker room with performance including myself and showing he is much more than an a “local competitor” but one capable of competing at a top tier level”

Unfortunately, advertised headliner TK O’Ryan was unable to participate in the tour for personal reasons.

Stay tuned to the WCSN for a full recap.

MPW Heads to Little Italy

This weekend will see Monster Pro Wrestling return to Edmonton’s Little Italy district for their annual Big Trouble in Little Italy event.

The show, featuring a number of MPW’s top stars, will feature matches every hour beginning at 12:30 pm at Giovanni Caboto Park. As is tradition, the show’s main event will feature an Over the Top Battle Royal.

The outdoor event is free to the public.

Full Match Card Announced for PWA Retribution

The Prairie Wrestling Alliance will make its return to Edmonton this Saturday for its first event in the capital region since June’s Night of Champions. After the shocking events of August 4th’s Summer Heat in Calgary – more on that here – Saturday will see Kenneth Anthony defend his newly-claimed PWA Championship against none other than “God’s Gift to Wrestling” Michael Richard Blais. Blais, who will be making his return to the promotion after a successful stint in the United Kingdom through July, will be looking to claim his first PWA title since losing the championship to Jay Lethal at Night of Champions 2018.

Another first-time title defence will take place on Saturday night as Zoë Sager looks to retain her title against PWA newcomer “The Masterpiece of the East” Alix Zwicker, who won a #1 contenders match against Kat von Heez earlier this month. While the two have faced off a number of times in the Canadian Wrestling Coalition, this will mark the first one-on-one matchup between the two in the Prairie Wrestling Alliance.

Elsewhere on the card, the Above Average Joes will defend the PWA Tag Team Championships against the duo of Gabriel and Mephisto, collectively known as D.E.D, Colton Kelly will face off with Brandon Van Danielson of the Western LionsKylie Morgan and Kat von Heez will go to battle, and Bobby Sharp squares off with the League’s Davey O’Doyle. Additionally, a fatal four-way featuring a quartet of the PWA’s finest will take place pitting Shaun Moore, Sheik Akbar Shabaz, Michael Allen Richard Clark and the returning “Kid Chocolate” Mo Jabari head-to-head.

Full card:

  • PWA Championship Match: Kenneth Anthony vs. Michael Richard Blais
  • PWA Women’s Championship Match: Zoë Sager vs. “The Masterpiece of the East” Alix Zwicker
  • PWA Tag Team Championship Match: The Above Average Joes (Kenny Stryker/Aiden Adams) vs. DED (“The Omen” Gabriel/Mephisto)

RCW Announce Pair of Returns

[media-credit name="Real Canadian Wrestling" link="facebook.com/rcwrestling" align="aligncenter" width="540"][/media-credit] Mentallo (left) and Starr

A pair of Western Canadian veterans have been confirmed for next week’s Real Canadian Wrestling shows.

Last week, RCW announced that both Mentallo and Wavell Starr will be making their anticipated returns to the promotion for next week’s three-show mini-tour across Alberta featuring “The Genius” Lanny Poffo.

Mentallo, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is a 22-year veteran of the independent scene. In his two-plus decades in wrestling, Mentallo has made appearances across RCW, CWE, PCW (Winnipeg), HIW (Regina) and over 15 additional promotions, winning championships at nearly every step along the way. Long-time RCW fans look back fondly on the title feud between Mentallo and current RCW star Big Jesse Youngblood, and one would have to wonder if the Zombie Hunter will set his sights on Youngblood’s Top Talent compatriot Heavy Metal and the RCW Canadian Heavyweight Championship.

Starr, originally from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, is another well-tenured veteran of the Canadian indies. A former developmental talent in WWE, Starr is perhaps best known in Western Canada for his time with both RCW and HIW. Though the three-time RCW Canadian Heavyweight Champion hasn’t set foot in an RCW ring in nearly two years, his reputation should earn him a spot at the top of the card fairly quickly.

Both will appear on RCW’s upcoming cards in Edmonton (August 29th) and Calgary (August 30th), with Mentallo making the trip to Red Deer on August 31st as well.
