Extreme Rules comes to us live on Sunday, July 15 from the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. Headlined by Roman Reigns vs. Bobby Lashley, every title is on the line except the Cruiserweight Championship and, unsurprisingly, the Universal Championship. However, there are some extremely talented wrestlers on the card, and that always helps! The build can be great or terrible, but it always boils down to the match quality. The team here at Win Column Sports breaks down the card and gives our official predictions! The panel for these predictions are:
Without further ado, let’s get to it!
- Preshow: SAnitY (Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe, Killian Dain) vs The New Day (Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston, Big E)– Tables Match
- Preshow: Andrade “Cien” Almas vs. Sin Cara
- Finn Balor vs Baron Corbin
- Braun Strowman vs Kevin Owens – Steel Cage Match
- RAW Tag Team Titles – The Deleters of Worlds (Woken Matt Hardy & Bray Wyatt) vs The B-Team (Curtis Axel & Bo Dallas)
- Smackdown Tag Team Titles – The Bludgeon Brothers (Harper & Rowan) vs Team Hell No (Kane & Daniel Bryan)
- United States Title Match – Jeff Hardy vs Shinsuke Nakamura
- Intercontinental Title Match Dolph Ziggler vs Seth Rollins – Iron Man Match
- Raw Women’s Championship match – Alexa Bliss vs Nia Jax – Extreme Rules Match
- Smackdown Women’s Championship match – Carmella (w/ James Ellsworth) vs Asuka
- WWE Championship match – AJ Styles vs Rusev (w/ Aiden English)
- Roman Reigns vs Bobby Lashley
SAnitY (Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe, Killian Dain) vs The New Day (Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston, Big E)– Tables Match
Spencer: It would be really, really stupid to have a faction lose their main roster PPV debut, even if it is a preshow match. I’ll give the win to SAnitY here, with Killian Dain unceremoniously depositing Xavier Woods through said table. Prediction: SAnitY
Parker: Warning: I am not very happy about this PPV’s build at all. But you gotta give SAnitY a big win here. After suffering losses in their first two televised matches, they need some momentum. Please WWE, don’t screw this group up. Give them a win here, where the loss can even be protected for the Princes of Positivity/Pancakes. Prediction: SAnitY wins.
Dylan: Why is this on the kickoff show? This one should be one of the best matches of the night. With how long the pre show is, I wish they would make this elimination. I’m really hoping that WWE doesn’t mess this one up and allow New Day to win. Prediction: SAnitY wins.
Prince: I would scrap out the Reigns vs Lashley match just to get this match on the main card. This would be match of the night if Ziggler vs Rollins wasn’t on this card. SAnitY needs to go over here. Prediction: SAnitY
Finn Balor vs Baron Corbin
Spencer: This one’s a coin toss for me; Corbin has been solid-to-great since shaving his head and adding the title of Constable to his name, while Balor is in need of some momentum after lacking a full-fledged storyline since WrestleMania season. Does WWE cash in on Corbin’s recent momentum? Or do they use it to build up a cooled-off Balor? I’ll go with the leader of the Balor Club, given that Corbin came out strong on the RAW go-home show on Monday. Prediction: Finn Balor
Parker: Constable Corbin originally sounded dead in the water, but to his credit, Baron Corbin has made this gimmick work. He’s detestable. And all the credit to Corbin for that. While Finn is always over with the crowd, and a fantastic wrestler, I think he’ll take a cheap loss here. What’s that thing Triple H always says? The Authority always wins. So, to go with his fancy new gimmick… Prediction: Baron Corbin steals a win, setting up a Summerslam rematch.
Dylan: I’m with Spencer, this one is a toss up. The fan in me wants Balor to win, but Corbin has a lot of momentum in his new role. I feel like Corbin will take this one extending their feud. Prediction: Baron Corbin wins.
Prince: This is a major toss up. As Spencer mentions above, Corbin has found bit of a groove in his new role but Balor desperately needs a win as well. I predict Corbin to win in some sort of shady faction with a rematch to follow. Prediction: Baron Corbin.
Andrade “Cien” Almas vs Sin Cara
Spencer: This will be excellent. Almas will not lose. Prediction: Andrade “Cien” Almas
Parker: Almas should go over, no doubt about it. Prediction: Andrade “Cien” Almas
Dylan: These two guys made the most out of their short match on Smackdown Live and it was highly entertaining. I don’t expect this one to be any different. I don’t see someone like Almas losing so quickly but I’ve been shocked before by some of the decision making. Prediction: Andrade “Cien” Almas wins.
Prince: They had a great outing on Smackdown and I expect the same here. No way Cien loses and hopefully he moves into a bigger program for summerslam. Prediction: Andrade “Cien” Almas
Braun Strowman vs Kevin Owens – Steel Cage Match
Spencer: Poor, poor Kevin Owens. Seriously – has he done anything wrong recently? All he’s done is tried to befriend the Monster in the Bank, but has gotten nowhere with their friendship. Quite the opposite, actually; Strowman has terrorized the Prizefighter at every turn. Normally, one would hope that such a bully would get their comeuppance in a major PPV match, and while Owens is still technically a heel, he may benefit from the added steel cage. Could we see him escape, earning a victory over one of the top babyfaces in the WWE? Methinks he does. Prediction: Kevin Owens
Parker: Braun is a bully and Kurt Angle is a monster. Seriously, KO has been receiving the booking of one of the top babyfaces in the company this past year. He lost his job on Smackdown, his United States title twice (via screwy means), his best friend Sami Zayn, got pushed off the stage in a porta-potty, his car ruined, and Kurt Angle just laughs about this stuff. That’s off-topic, however; it’s fairly obvious who wins here, as Braun doesn’t lose to anyone but the Big Dog. Prediction: Braun Strowman wins.
Dylan: Kevin Owens has had a terrible few months. I feel like the only way he wins is if Braun throws him through the cage. I don’t see WWE pulling the trigger on that finish because of the last Steel Cage match in WWE… Prediction: Braun Strowman wins.
Prince: Props to Kevin Owens for consistently adapting to new storylines that creative throws at him. He’s been great in this feud but it’s making him look weak. With that being said, he needs the win for the storyline to pay off, and I think he will pick up the W here. A loss won’t hurt Strowman as he will gain all momentum when he cashes in his briefcase at Summerslam. Prediction: Kevin Owens
RAW Tag Team Titles – The Deleters of Worlds (Woken Matt Hardy & Bray Wyatt) vs The B-Team (Curtis Axel & Bo Dallas)
Spencer: Unlike a few of my Win Column compatriots, I’m still thoroughly entertained by this feud. Both teams have been putting forth excellent efforts over the last few weeks, and I don’t think I’ll ever be tired of Bo Dallas’ impression of his real-life brother Bray Wyatt. However, entertainment doesn’t buy you wins in this industry, and despite their fantastic run as of late I still don’t see them as viable challengers to the Deleters of Worlds. Prediction: The Deleters of Worlds
Parker: This feud was fun for the first few weeks. Now? I’m pretty bored with this creatively bankrupt feud. With AOP and The Revival starting to get consistent TV time & appearances, I’m hoping one of these teams moves into the tag team title scene. Prediction: The Deleters of Worlds retain their titles.
Dylan: This feud has actually been entertaining to me. Dallas and Axel are making the best of their opportunity. I’d love to see this extend into another Ultimate Deletion match. Maybe SummerSlam? Prediction: The Deleters of Worlds retain.
Prince: Who would of thought that the B Team would be one of the most entertaining parts of Raw right now. I’m enjoying this feud but I think it’s time for Revival or AOP to take the titles off The Deleters of Worlds at SS. Prediction: The Deleters of Worlds retain.
Smackdown Tag Team Titles – The Bludgeon Brothers (Harper & Rowan) vs Team Hell No (Kane & Daniel Bryan)
Spencer: The Bludgeon Brothers have had an awful run so far with the Smackdown Tag Team Championships. This is their first real chance at a statement victory for their reign; defeating a team with as many accolades as Team Hell No will legitimize them in a way that defeating the Good Brothers could not. That’s what I’m expecting tonight as well – perhaps with some interference from the Miz thrown in as well. Prediction: The Bludgeon Brothers retain
Parker: Team Hell No is always fun – Kane and DB have unreal chemistry together. Best of all, they’re a good tag team! However, I can’t pick them winning for a couple reasons. One, I highly doubt Vince will put the titles on the next mayor of Knox County. Two, 2B have been built up for months – I doubt they’ll lose it either this close to Summerslam/to a thrown together team. Three, I think there will be something during this match to help set up a marquee Daniel Bryan singles match at Summerslam. We could see Miz – Bryan at Summerslam, or Bryan vs… Kane. Prediction: The Bludgeon Brothers retain.
Dylan: I will be highly upset if Team Hell No loses this one. But it’s very likely that Kane won’t be working a full schedule leading up to SummerSlam. I’m just gonna go with my heart on this one even thought it’s likely to be wrong. Prediction: Team Hell No win prompting an “I’m The Tag Team Champions!” celebration.
Prince: I really want to see the Bludgeon Brothers feud with Sanity. I don’t know when that happens, but in order to do so, they have to retain the championships. A win over Team Hell No will solidify them as a major tag team and Team Hell No can afford the loss. When is Daniel Bryan moving into the WWE Championship picture? Prediction: The Bludgeon Brothers
United States Championship Match – Jeff Hardy vs Shinsuke Nakamura
Spencer: Shinsuke Nakamura was bitten by a police dog within the last few weeks. Frankly, that’s reason enough for Vince McMahon to book him to win, right? An apology title is the best sort of title. Prediction: Shinsuke Nakamura
Parker: If there’s something Vince McMahon loves in this world (other than big sweaty men), it’s a foreign heel holding the United States title. Also, Jeff seems to be beat up pretty badly. Give Jeff a bit of time off, see how Nakamura can do while holding a belt, and give Shinsuke a bit of momentum back after losing to AJ Styles over and over. It just all makes sense. Prediction: Shinsuke Nakamura becomes the new United States Champion
Dylan: A foreign heel holding the US Championship? How original. Prediction: Shinsuke wins.
Prince: Vince loves foreigners holding the US title and Jeff Hardy needs some time off. Prediction: Shinsuke Nakamura
Intercontinental Championship Match – Dolph Ziggler vs Seth Rollins – Iron Man Match
Spencer: A Ziggler victory here would be fantastic for a few reasons. Number one, it gives Rollins some room to move into the main event scene, and hopefully a challenge with Brock Lesnar at Summerslam. Most exciting to me, however, may be the fact that at the end of this run, we’ll likely get to see a Drew McIntyre/Dolph Ziggler match for the Intercontinental Championship, and that’s just delightful. Prediction: Dolph Ziggler
Parker: Rollins was white hot with the IC title. Originally, I was pissed when he dropped it – but Ziggler’s been one of the best parts about RAW since being joined by Drew as his muscle. I hope to see Seth move into the main event picture after Summerslam – and the advantage of Drew McIntyre at ringside just puts Dolph ahead here. However, the fans win with this one. All of me hopes for a Dolph/Drew feud, just cause I want to see Dolph sell the Claymore. Prediction: Dolph Ziggler narrowly retains the belt.
Dylan: If this match doesn’t go on last… they’re doing it wrong. The feud is red hot and the match very well could be a match of the year candidate. If Tyson Kidd produces this match, hold on to your seats. Drew McIntyre needs to have some sort of spotlight here. I feel Ziggler wins and has to be carried out on McIntyre’s shoulders. Prediction: Dolph Ziggler retains.
Prince: Match of the night right here. One of the only reasons to watch Raw the past couple of weeks is because of this feud. I’m really excited for this. I hope Ziggler retains so we get a program with McIntyre as Rollins moves into the main event picture to take the title off Brock Lesnar. I think that would be the smartest way to book it, but knowing WWE we will probably get another rematch at SS with Reigns facing Lesnar… ugh. Prediction: Dolph Ziggler
Raw Women’s Championship match – Alexa Bliss vs Nia Jax – Extreme Rules Match
Spencer: Looks like we’re headed towards a triple threat at Summerslam; somehow, Rousey is going to screw Jax out of winning the championship here. Prediction: Alexa Bliss by DQ
Parker: I don’t care for either of these wrestlers right now. Nia’s character is a mess – she literally went from saying “Be a Star” in one of her promos, to becoming a huge bully in the Rousey feud. And I’m just too fatigued of Alexa with the title around her waist. Prediction: Alexa Bliss retains by DQ when Rousey interferes.
Dylan: The flagship show for Extreme Rules matches and this is the match we get? Wonderful. I can’t imagine an “Extreme Rules” stipulation without some sort of interference from Rousey sitting at ringside. Alexa is on her way to a Rousey match at SummerSlam. Prediction: Alexa wins.
Prince: Match ends in DQ when Ronda interferes, setting up a triple threat at Summerslam. Prediction: Alexa Bliss
Smackdown Women’s Championship match – Carmella (w/ James Ellsworth in a shark cage) vs Asuka
Spencer: I hate shark cages. Prediction: Asuka
Parker: I just want the title off Carmella. And Asuka needs to do something to get her mystique back. Ever since losing the streak, she just hasn’t felt special. Losing twice to Carmella would really hurt her. Get the title on someone who will actually wrestle on a weekly basis, and please don’t carry this through until Summerslam. Prediction: Asuka wins the Smackdown Women’s Championship (please)
Dylan: This one is a toss up for me. I 100% feel like Asuka should be the winner on Sunday, but I don’t trust WWE to do the right thing. Prediction: Carmella wins.
Prince: I pray to god Asuka wins here and we get Lynch vs Asuka at Summerslam. Prediction: Asuka
WWE Championship match – AJ Styles vs Rusev, of Rusev Day
Spencer: I’m fully willing to admit that I have very, very little confidence that this prediction is correct. However, I’m a firm believer that one day, maybe, my words will have some sort of impact on the state of the WWE and it’s current product. If I ever have influence on even ONE piece of WWE history, it will be the way WWE treats Rusev. The man is a damn treasure. Prediction: Rusev
Parker: Rusev Day isn’t my cup of tea. However, you simply can’t deny the man’s popularity. He’s over as hell and probably should have had at least a title opportunity by now. This just feels like a filler feud, to get Styles to Summerslam. It also feels like a reward for Rusev for his merch sales. However, Rusev isn’t taking this one. I still think it’ll be Styles vs Joe at Summerslam. Prediction: AJ Styles retains
Dylan: AJ Styles… Samoa Joe… Summerslam… enough said. Prediction: AJ Styles
Prince: I would LOVE to see Rusev win but thinking about Styles vs Joe at Summerslam also makes me want to mark the hell out. Prediction: AJ Styles
Roman Reigns vs Bobby Lashley
Spencer: Why is Bobby Lashley Back, and Why Should I Care? is not only the title of a recent Win Column Sports article, but something that represents my entire apathetic feeling towards this match. I can’t say enough to tell you how disappointing Lashley has been since returning, nor will I go on a long-winded rant as to why I am. Somehow, someway, WWE gave me a match that I wanted less than Reigns/Mahal. This is bad. Prediction: I cry in frustration that this is the main event, and Roman Reigns wins.
Parker: Fun fact: The WWE Championship has not main evented a dual-branded show since the brand split. Thanks Cageside Seats. So why not have Roman – Lashley main event? So you could have Roman take on Brock again? I mean, who would ever get sick of another one of those matches? Conversely, you could have Lesnar take on Lashley, who’s had one of the most bland return runs in the WWE? Realistically, whoever wins this match is likely #1 contender – both we’re reportedly tabbed as the guy to take on Brock at Summerslam. I expect the winner here to do so, and with that… Prediction: Why would anyone ever bet against Roman Reigns? Roman wins and Bobby shows respect to him after, prompting Reigns vs Lesnar at Summerslam.
Dylan: Nope. Prediction: I don’t watch this match.
Prince: This match is so irrelevant, yet it’s rumoured to be the main event. What a joke. I would much rather take Lashley vs. Lesnar over Reigns vs. Lesnar but you know that’s exactly where we are headed. Prediction: Roman Reigns
