Stingers Clinch Playoff Berth, Have Eyes on First Seed
Following a pair of victories in Guelph Saturday and Hamilton Sunday, The Edmonton Stingers have clinched a playoff spot in the Canadian Elite Basketball League Finals. Now with their spot in the August 22-25 spectacle confirmed, the Stingers take focus on the Number One Seed going into the finals. But to do that, they will have to take out their opponent this week, the Niagra River Lions. With a victory over the 12-4 River Lions this Friday, the 11-5 Stingers will pull into a tie for first place in the league, and holding the tie-breaker, with three games remaining. Tip-off from the Meridian Centre in St. Catherine’s is 5 pm MDT, and is available on CEBL.tv and the CBC Sports App.
The Stingers return home from their K-Days road trip to take on the revamped Fraser Valley Bandits August 1. For more information and tickets, check out thestingers.ca. For a comprehensive breakdown of all things Stingers, check out our friends at Dunkin’ Dhooma at dunkindooma.com.
Prospects Look to Make Hay While the Sun Shines
The weather has been as spotty as the Prospects the last couple weeks. Following a split with the Lethbridge Bulls this past Sunday, the Prospects sit fourth in the WCBL’s Western Division with a 20-22 record. Up next on the schedule is the third place Medicine Hat Mavericks. At 22-20, this two-game set becomes very important, as the Prospects can push for third place, and possibly pull within half a game of Lethbridge for second place. First pitch on both nights is 7:05. Wednesday is NASCAR Night, with a special NASCAR on-site, as well as discounts available at the game to visit Alberta’s NASCAR track.
Following a trip to Okotoks Friday to take on the first place Dawgs, the Prospects return home for an important four-game home-and-home series with the Fort McMurray Giants. With the Giants currently sporting an identical 20-22 record, the Prospects can put some distance between themselves and the Giants with a good showing here. First Pitch Saturday is 7:05, and is “We Love Oil and Gas Night”. Sunday’s Matinee starts at 2:05 pm, and is Super Heroes Day. Eddies look to Forge a Victory this Saturday
The weather played havoc in the Eddies last game, a 0-0 draw against Valour FC, with lightning and rain delaying the match and not allow either team to gain any momentum. With the weather turning to the better, the Eddies look to improve their fortunes as well, as they host Forge FC from Hamilton at Clarke Park. The Forge are currently leading the Fall Competition in the CPL with a 3-1 record, while the Eddies sit fourth with a 1-1-1 record. Kick-off from Clarke Park is 4:00 pm MDT.
