The rain wreaked havoc throughout the WMBL cancelling two games and shortening two others. For a baseball game to be deemed official, the visiting team must bat through five innings of play. Mother Nature held on just long enough Tuesday night as the Edmonton Prospects defeated the Yorkton Cardinals 8-0. The Prospects offense scored two runs in inning they batted.
Prospects starting pitcher Connor Burns will be credited with a complete game shutout. Burns only allowed 3 Cardinals on base – a single, a walk (which was nullified by a double-play) and a double – through his 5 innings of work. With the win Burns evens his record at 2 wins and 2 losses dropping his ERA to 3.32.
With 1-out in the first inning Zane Takhar started up the Prospects offence with a single. Nick Spillman collected his team leading 27th RBI of the season with his 4th double of the season. Jake MacDonald would drive home Spillman with a single to give the Prospects a 2-0 lead.
Gio Villaneuva, Percy Liu and Takhar all drew walks to load the bases in the bottom of the second inning with only 1-out. Michael Gahan flew out deep enough to right field to bring in Villaneuva. A walk to Spillman reloaded the bases then a walk to Beaux Guilbeau made the score 4-0.
Villaneuva got hit by a pitch and Liu singled with 1-out in the third inning. Tony Olson’s 5th double of the season drove home Villaneuva. Takhar, who is tied for the league lead in walks (22), earns a RBI with a productive groundball out making it 6-0 for the Prospects.
Spillman led-off the bottom of the 4th with a walk and with 2-outs was joined by AJ Nitzschke who also walked. Villaneuva’s 2nd double of the season brought both runners home and gave the Prospects an 8-0 lead.
Gio Villaneuva’s official line reads 1-1 with 2-RBI double. He also reached base via a walk and a hit-by-pitch. With all due respect to Connor Burns’ 5 innings of shutout baseball, Villaneuva wins the Player of the Game nod.
